In Greece, at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, we were organizing an innovation workshop with the purpose of gathering suggestions for an artistic installation. According to TILLT Europe (2011), can be used to “stimulate innovation, sustainability and inclusiveness.”
In order to understand the need of such an intervention, the circumstances of the university have to be adumbrated:
:: about 72`000 students, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) is the largest university in Greece
:: it extends over an area of about 33.4ha & is located right in the heart of the city
:: the campus` centre is highlighted by a generous park
:: broken windows, illegal parking, littering & filthy sanitation facilities indicate a lack of maintenance
:: the absent maintenance is on the one hand based on financial shortages, on the other hand on a lack of awareness as well as interest on the side of the campus users
In order to somehow handle the multifaceted issues, the enormous size of the campus as well as the nearly infinite individual opinions of each participant, an innovation workshop was needed. We structured it as follows:
1:: framework with necessary details
2:: introduction into culture-based creativity & impacts of an artistic intervention
2:: generating innovative ideas
4:: presentation & selection
5:: conclusion & next steps
For each step a different method was used – elevator pitches, dotting & brainwriting were just a few of them. All in all it was an intense, but successful day with convincing outcome.
And: it was a pleasure to organize as well as accomplish it with Maya Donelson & Lena Knoop.
